Cant even progress in the story, leveling carpentry to level 2 gives you an error when you try to exit the menu

Hey dev,
either implement save games that actually work - because I'm not willing to drag myself through the intro every single fucking patch. So - I don't want to start over all the time.
OR
ship the new version with a save game that starts with the new stuff.
I love the game but I started it from scrap 5x already and I just don't have the time to drag myself through the same crap over and over again.
