every other game by this dev had the plot start out sensible and quickly devolve into nonsense.

No, because that is just the prologue setting up a "weak to strong" story.
As well as motivation. Your character's motivation is to never be weak again.
You literally get magic powers a few clicks after that scene. And now you get to be strong.
