Honestly, I think he was just controlled opposition, nothing more. Basically, if they're very popular well known, and seemingly dish out disturbing truth, but are still alive: they're controlled opposition. I mean, they can kill someone to make it look like a heart attack fairly easily... do you really believe they'd let someone become that powerful without taking care of it "discretely"?
