I think I know what make you feel this way, but putting aside the stone heart of the MC as well as the religious and power-hierarchy speeches (along with rape culture for those that don’t like that), the story itself is pretty good (as the other Anonymous said).
Yes, at some point he made a bet that he shouldn’t have done and thus that looked stupid from him, but don’t dismiss the fact that from his point of view he effectively had absolutely no reason to doubt that he will wins it.
Then again, it’s just a supposition from me since I have no idea how you could tell it was “somewhere about in the half”.
