the moment i saw unity i was like nope, screw this, only idiots use unity for a friggin vn, use friggin renpy for this shit, atleast then youve got scrollback option and hide text box options automatically, it runs smoother etc, unity is trash for vns

That is true, you basically need to build a VN engine from scratch if you want to use Unity. But if the dev wants more freedom in the long run or to use more advanced layering/camera.

Rick and Morty: A Way Back Home comes to mind as a unity game that started off a resource hog with poor stability which has grown into quite a nice game with a ton of potential thanks to Unity. Guess it ultimately depends on what you’re trying to accomplish. No reason for it if you just want a standard VN.
