Just because his mother comes from a rich family that she turned away from to be with the dad. But Jill's story imo is just mirroring the MC's parents story. In a movie Jill would be the one the MC would be going after.
The story mc's dad tells him about how the parents met implies that the mother abandoned her wealthy family to be with him. It's certainly possible that the mom was Jill's sister, but the photo Jill keeps in her drawer shows her as a child with her sister. The mc is 18 so for the timing to line up Jill would be in her mid to late 20s, though from contextual clues she is 22 at most. I don't believe her actual age is ever expressly stated.
