No, it was stated last update that due to the voting poll on patreon that they would add a sandbox going forward. And no it wouldn't really buckle, it'd just take decision making on which girl you'd wanna see for a particular scene. Which is what the game originally was. You'd miss a scene with a certain girl depending on who you'd prioritize.

Yes it's was like that, now on the chapter 1 you can do the scenes you missed, at the prologue, like if you gave a ride to Anna, you now can see Kara and Keren scene during the sandbox mode at chapter 1.
Also the idea to change to sandbox come because of the amount of characters that way you can make your own way.
The sandbox is completely optional, you can just skip and go to your object at once.
