Can someone please explain me how to play? Do I have to follow the walkthrough of 1 character? and start over again to follow another 1?
No. You can pursue all characters concurrently. The walkthrough is just laid out with the fastest way possible for each individual character (in case you aren't interested in certain characters).
As of v0.3.2.1:
MUCH better! There will probably always be some "sliding" as character animation is only for four directions while movement is in any direction, but now it's not nearly as noticeable.
On the subject of walk cycle animation, if anyone wants a tip, it's important that the speed with which the supporting foot moves across the character image matches the speed with which the image moves across the world. The speeds cancel out and the supporting foot stays in the same spot.
I can't figure out how to meet Nicole. She is all over the story but no way to contact her.

In MC's bedroom, use the jeans icon on the upper left in the HUD. It's nominally a "drop your pants" action, but the only current use is to summon Nicole in MC's bedroom.
This update introduced a Fixed Aspect Ratio "feature" that introduced this bug. The Exit button is behind the black bars in certain aspect rations. v0.3.2.2 fixes this issue (and a few other things).
