This way, he won't have to rely on Mr. and Mrs. Cruz for money. Simultaneously, Tom desires independence, now that he has reached legal age.
Mrs. Cruz may not have liked the idea initially, but she eventually realizes that Tom is an adult who needs to live on his own.
