What do you think was the main reason that YouTube deactivated the "downvotes"? Because they were spammed!
Accpeting only positive ratings (like youtube) is bullshit - and is controlling the thoughts of others as you mentioned. So more consequent it would have been if youtube also disabled the ratings entirely.
Because: no rating means no spamming -> no manipulation -> no thought control. So I don't get your point.

happens to me with a lot of games. you can't even be sure if virus scanner won't alert you. it's the modern world of the Internet, because anyone can manipulate copied files and then pass them on.
my advice: if you want to be as safe as possible, only download from links provided by the devs themselves (their patreon, homepages or official channels)
