There's only one problem with your hypothesis, someone posted the link for the latest update in the middle of last month. If it was one of the patrons, why would they wait 3 months to post it? The only logical explaination for someone posting it in August, is it was the Dev, who for whatever reason has been unavailable for several months.
The dev hasnt been active for months now, he hasnt said or posted anything. It was a patron.

Scroll down (a lot) there is a post on how to make your own .txt file that works.
In short create a new file āzz_patch.rpyā in the game folder. You can use notepad or something like it.
