Compare the potential answers to the character's traits. There are clues you'll get used to with a little practice.
There are also some characters who simply will not say yes, no matter what you say. There's a bar under the character that changes along with your responses. If that bar is too low, you're fucked.

Is it save?
I've been playing it for a while, and it's been safe for me.
That said, I don't recall where I got the most recent version. Use at your own risk, but I think the risk is fairly low.
