User account system is currently in public beta testing phase. Bugs, inconsistencies and features not working as intended are to be expected.
But old saves DO work in the next release. There was only a couple of times in the old format when the old saves wouldn't work. Since changing the game engine to Unity (when, obviously, none of the previous saves would work) EVERY save from a previous 1.x update still works. Don't believe me? Go to my Box.com folder and download my saved game from version 1.0 and use it on the new 1.5 update. It works.
Or do you mean it's just that you can't be bothered to copy your old saves folder to your new install?
Yeah, I gotta agree with you there. I would have preferred it if those two new lessons had continued straight after the previous ones rather than you have to wait until the new year. Those dead weeks are desperately needing more lessons - something that might be included in future updates...

Copy the save folder to game root directory and you're good to go.
don't know why but, in 1.5, Downtown image at 6am everyday is all white.
