Simple: RPG-maker is easier to use than Ren'py and Unity is harder still.

Not to mention that the number of developers that can do well in Unity can be counted with one's fingers. F**ing sprite based games take more resources to run than a good FPS game; so frustrating...

right, but the more content the more tedious it becomes, the player has to spend most of the time steering cute pixel pixies through a 2D environment
Probably, but RPG-maker also needs a lot of time investment if it should work out fine. I find the change between exploring a pixel-map and 3D-CG animations is clashing in an awkward way, the biggest issue about RPGM is that is simply outdated.
